Follow the Signals for Healthy Vision

Your eyes work like a traffic signal — they send you red, amber and green cues every day. Learning to read those signals can be the difference between catching a problem early and losing precious sight. Here is how to respond to each one.

We tend to treat our vision as something that simply works until, one day, it doesn’t. But the eye rarely fails without warning. Long before a serious problem becomes obvious, it leaves small clues — a little blur here, an ache there, eyes that tire too quickly by evening. The trouble is that these signals are easy to brush aside in the rush of daily life.

At Al-Rayaz Hospital Trust, our Eye Care Centre sees many patients whose conditions could have been managed far more easily had they come in sooner. So we have borrowed an idea everyone in Karachi already understands — the traffic light — to make eye health simple to follow.

Read your eye like a traffic signal

Red — Stop and pay attentionDon’t ignore the warning signs

Blurry vision, persistent eye strain, or recurring headaches are not things to wait out. They may turn out to be nothing more than an outdated spectacle prescription — but the very same symptoms can also point to glaucoma, cataract, or changes at the back of the eye caused by diabetes or high blood pressure.

The danger is that some of the most sight-threatening conditions are painless and slow. By the time vision noticeably drops, damage may already be permanent. If a symptom is new, getting worse, or simply will not go away, treat it as a red light and have your eyes checked.

Amber — Slow down and manage your riskProtect your eyes from everyday strain

Most of us now spend hours staring at phones, laptops and screens. This leads to what doctors call digital eye strain — dryness, tired eyes, blurred focus and headaches. A simple habit helps: the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Blink often, keep screens an arm’s length away, and rest your eyes in good lighting.

Just as important is keeping diabetes and blood pressure under control. Pakistan has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world, and uncontrolled blood sugar quietly damages the tiny blood vessels of the retina — a leading cause of preventable blindness. Well-managed sugar and blood pressure protect your sight as much as they protect your heart.

Green — Go ahead and stay on trackMake the yearly eye exam a habit

A green light means everything is moving as it should — but only because you keep it that way. A yearly eye exam is the single best habit for lifelong vision. It checks far more than whether you need glasses; an eye doctor can spot early signs of glaucoma, cataract, diabetic eye disease and other conditions before you ever notice a symptom.

Children, adults over 40, and anyone living with diabetes or high blood pressure especially benefit from a regular check-up. Catching things early almost always means simpler treatment and better results.

Small signals, big difference

None of these steps is complicated. Notice the red lights and act on them. Respect the amber ones by protecting your eyes and managing your health. And keep the green light glowing with a check-up once a year. Vision is one of the few things we cannot replace — and one of the easiest to protect when we pay attention in time.
